RPM Financial Group helps cybersecurity and GovCon professionals in Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia make clear decisions about retirement accounts and benefits each time they change jobs, switch contracts, or move between federal service and the private sector. Every option has tradeoffs, and the right choice depends on your plan, your costs, and your goals.
Comparing your choices side by side: leave the money in the old plan, move it to a new employer's plan, move it to an IRA, or take a cash distribution, including costs, investment choices, and tax effects.
Bringing accounts from past employers into one view so nothing is forgotten or left unmanaged.
Understanding what happens to your pension and Thrift Savings Plan balance, and what your options are, before you decide.
Looking at salary, bonus, match, equity, and benefits together when weighing a contractor role against a federal one, or one contractor against another.
Making sure health coverage, HSA balances, and life and disability coverage do not lapse in the transition.
A short list of what to do in your first 30 days at a new job so decisions are not made in a rush.
A free, no-obligation conversation to confirm we're a good fit.
A focused session on your accounts, benefits, and the move you are considering.
Built in our planning software, with the options and their costs laid out side by side.
Revisited as your job, accounts, and family change.
Should I roll an old 401(k) into an IRA or my new plan?
There is no single right answer. Leaving money in the old plan, moving it to a new employer plan, or moving it to an IRA can each make sense depending on fees, investment choices, services, loan features, and creditor protection. We compare these for your situation. Note that when a rollover results in assets managed by RPM, RPM and our advisor may earn fees, so you should weigh that when deciding.
Can I leave my TSP where it is after leaving federal service?
In general, former federal employees can keep their money in the TSP, and the TSP's own costs are low, so staying can be a reasonable choice. Some people also consider moving money into the TSP from other plans. The rules and options depend on your situation, so we walk through them together.
How do I compare a contractor offer with a federal salary?
We look at total compensation: pay, bonus, retirement contributions, health coverage, leave, and the value of a federal pension. A higher salary does not always mean higher total compensation, so we build the comparison with you.
What happens to my HSA when I change employers?
An HSA is generally yours to keep when you leave an employer. What changes is who contributes and what coverage you have going forward. We help you check eligibility and coverage so there is no gap.
