How is a FERS pension calculated?
Under FERS, the basic annuity is generally 1% of your high-3 average pay for each year of service, or 1.1% if you retire at 62 or older with at least 20 years of service. Your high-3 is your highest average basic pay over any three consecutive years. Rules can change, so confirm your numbers with OPM or your agency HR office.
When can I retire under FERS?
It depends on your age and years of service. Common paths include age 62 with 5 years, age 60 with 20 years, or your minimum retirement age (MRA) with 30 years. Retiring at your MRA with at least 10 years of service is possible, but the annuity is generally reduced for each year you are under 62. Your agency HR office can confirm your eligibility.
Will I keep my federal health insurance in retirement?
Generally, to carry FEHB into retirement you must be entitled to an immediate annuity and have been continuously enrolled in FEHB for the five years immediately before your annuity begins. We help you plan for this early. Confirm your situation with your agency HR office.
Do I have to live in the DC area to work with you?
We're based in Rockville, Maryland, and work across the DMV and nationwide. Most meetings are virtual.
